Abutilon megapotamicum - trailing form of the flowering maple is a
favorite to all who grow it. The 2-3" long, narrow flowers consist of
lemon yellow petals surrounded at the base of a bright red sepals.
The small, 2-3" long pointed leaves are shallowly 3-lobed and almost

frequent clusters of pink flowers. Make a great feature plant or back drop to other
tropicals.   It will grow in subtropical conditions and is often seen in gardens of the
American South. It is resistant to salty sea winds and prolonged drought and dry
conditions  Flowers of the plant are poisonous; the smoke from burning clippings will

Vitex trifolia variegata -  This fast growing shrub is popular for its
variegated foliage and pretty blue flowers. Vitex will reach a height of 10 to 12
feet and quickly becomes tree-like if neglected or trained to encourage
multi-trunk development. However, this plant creates a nice, dense shrub if it
is properly pruned and will be nearly prostrate if planted on a sandy beach.
The trifoliate evergreen leaves are gray-green with white marginal variegation.
These soft leaves have grayish pubescence on their underside and smell
pungent when crushed. Attractive blue or lavender flowers with white spots
appear in terminal clusters during the summertime.

leaves make this plant a favorite for cut foliage for flower arranging. The
Fallopia will reach a mature height of about 4 feet and they will spread and
make larger clumps each year, hence, the need for pruning if you want to
confine this plant in a smaller area.

branches that grow mostly straight up to about 6 ft (1.8 m) tall. It has shiny dark green
leaves with wavy margins and long pointed tips.From late summer through winter firespike
produces abundant 9-12 in (23-30.5 cm) upright panicles of brilliant red tubular flowers.
Firespike likes moist but well-drained soil. Once established it can tolerate all but the
longest droughts. Softwood cuttings are very easy to root, and they will bloom in their
first year. Specimen plant. Hummingbirds love it.

Brillantaisia nitens (Tropical Giant Sage) - A perennial herb or subshrub that can grow to
9 feet tall in its native habitat of wet forests of tropical west Africa from Guinea south to West
and East Cameroons but likely will grow to about 4 to 6 feet in our drier climate. It has large
dark green arrowhead shaped leaves with winged petioles on prominent square stems with
spikes of oppositely paired large blue-purple flowers that are bi-labiate with a large hooded
petals in summer to fall. Plant in morning sun to light shade in a area that gets regular
irrigation - do not allow to completely dry out. It is listed hardy to 30°F and we have not
tested it to temperatures below this. This plant is interesting and has beautiful large flowers
and is also used in Africa for many traditional herbal remedies

Hibiscus Mutabilis - The large vertically stretching shrub or multi-stemmed tree stands on its
own as a unique specimen for the fall garden. Plant stems reach skyward to heights of 8-15 feet
bearing lobed foliage resembling large maple leaves. The fall flower show starts in September.
Double flowers measuring 4 to 6 inches in diameter open and gradually mutate petal color from
white to pink to rose as they age. The species name 'mutabilis' means changeable. Flower form
is reminiscent of bourbon roses or camellias but without fragrance. The plant is very easy to
grow in USDA plant hardiness zones 7-11. Confederate rose prefers a full six hours of sun per
day and rich organic well-drained slightly acidic soil. Hibiscus thrive on compost including
decomposed manure.
